Album Overview
Tha GIM, which stands for the God in me, released his new project entitled Eternal Sonshine EP on July 21, 2009. And guess what?? It’s FREE. There seems to be an explosion of free Christian Hip-Hop on the net here lately! This album is the “prequel” to his upcoming full length album and is also called Eternal Sonshine. I thought that the "O" in Sonshine was pretty clever, which represents Jesus’ eternal glory!
So what do you get with the Eternal Sonshine EP? You get 6 tracks that all cover biblical topics. The EP download package comes with the lyrics to each song which always comes in handy when you’re trying to dig deeper to get the spiritual meaning from music for the purpose of applying it to your life! This is especially true if you are a visual learner! Tha GIM hails from California and you can hear the west coast influence in his music. He has somewhat of a slow flow so there are not many words in his bars. I would have to say, lyrically, the best track on the EP is “All That I Am.” This track consists of Tha GIM pouring out his feelings directly to the Lord. Production wise the EP was pretty good. There were a variety of sounds and a mix of both slow and upbeat tracks. The beat for the smooth joint “Home Coming” stood out to me the most, as Tha GIM rapped about Heaven in dedication to his recently passed mother.
The Eternal Sonshine EP is definitely worth checking out, especially since its free! So you have nothing to lose! You can get it from Tha GIM’s myspace by clicking here.
Spiritual Significance
The Eternal Sonshine EP has a good deal of spiritual significance that you can pull from it. For example, Tha GIM’s name and the first track on the EP entitled “Tha God In Me,” comes from 2 Corinthians 6:16: “Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we arethe temple of the living God; just as God said, ‘I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.” 1 Corinthians 6:19 lets us know it is God the Holy Spirit which dwells in us. When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit fills us and lives in us. In “Home Coming,” Tha GIM rhymes about Heaven and how there will be no more death, mourning, crying, nor pain which is based on Revelation 21:4.
“Get Rich” is based on the parable that Jesus told in Luke 12:15-21 about the man who stored up riches for himself and who was not rich towards God. In Jesus’ story, the rich man died before he could use what he stored up. This is an important message for today’s culture with all of the get rich quick schemes and slogans like “Get rich or die trying.” Tha GIM talks about being rich towards and finding our wealth in God. This means thinking outside of our earthbound or worldly goals and using what we have been given for God’s kingdom. Faith, service, and obedience are ways to become rich towards God!
