 The Soundtrack 4 Christian Livin'

Album Overview

Dre’ Sr. gives a solid explanation of what the theme of the album is at the end of the intro track: “The concept of the album is this... cats don’t understand that the music they listen to is such a significant role in their life. You listen to certain things at certain times to put you in certain moods. So if your life was a movie, your music would be a soundtrack to your movie. Well in the same way I wanted to put together an album that would cause Christians to examine themselves compared to Scripture and to see if they really are who they say they are…to see if you really are walking this walk.” There’s one thing I have to say to that. Don’t sleep on this dude!

If you have never heard of Dre’ Sr. and like comparisons, I would say his style resembles that of the Reach Records crew. His lyrics are sound in doctrine and you hear references to scripture throughout his songs, whether he’s saying a verse directly or interpreting one and using it for application. I am a sucker for punch lines in hip hop music and Dre’ Sr. has a lot of these. Dre’ does a great job of encouraging listeners to consider their ways and see if they match up to what a follower of Jesus should look like.

Production wise this album is not the best, but it’s not bad. Some of the beats seem to sound the same and seem to be simple. By simple I mean lacking in a variety of sounds. Don’t get me wrong though! This album still got my head bobbin with the up-tempo tunes. The beat style made it easier to focus on what Dre’ was saying which is a plus.

So if you are wondering if this album will be a good purchase, stop and just go get it! Especially if you are looking to buy new music! This is definitely not bad for a debut album. Also, if you haven't gotten Dre' Sr.'s sophomore album Juneteenth, make sure you get that too!

Spiritual Significance

Living Sacrifice is based on Romans 12:1 which says, “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” When sacrificing an animal according to God’s law, a priest would kill the animal, cut it in pieces, and place it on the altar. Sacrifice was important, but even in the Old Testament God made it clear that obedience from the heart was much more important (check out 1 Samuel 15:22; Psalm 40:6, Amos 5:21-24). God wants us to offer ourselves, not animals, as living sacrifices by daily laying aside our own desires to follow Him, putting all our energy and resources at his disposal and trusting Him to guide us.

This album is full of spiritual significance as Dre’ Sr. raps about topics like being bold in spreading the gospel (“We Aint Scared”), not compromising and holding back the truth, not being conformed to the world (“We Won’t Compromise”) , and losing your pride (“Breakdown”). All of these present some of the ways that you can offer your body as a living sacrifice to God. That’s just a little bit of the spiritual significance, go purchase the CD for more!
