Dillon Chase - The Light

Album Overview

"they got glocks and gats/we got gospel tracks" - Dillon Chase

If there is any doubt or question about Dillon Chase's purpose and intent for his project The Light, they can all be cleared up in the first 1 minute and 55 seconds of it. The Light opens with an "Intro" that draws a line in the sands of complacency and compromise and sends the call out for those looking for Light in a world of Darkness. In less than two minutes I had already made my mind up about this CD. Dillon Chase approaches the mic with a boldness and conviction that comes shining through on each track. Ironically, he has stated that he is not interested in people acknowledging him for the quality of his music but rather acknowledge God and His Son Jesus Christ; the irony is that because he has taken this stance, I believe that it raises the quality of his music to a higher level. Let me explain, in this day it is not uncommon for almost anyone to be able to snatch a hot beat and ride it with some level of skill; but it takes much more than skill alone to produce music that is tight enough to make the head nod, but reach inside your chest and touch your heart, and that is what this project does. Just a few notes into this I could smell 116 all over this one (and that's a good thing); Dillon Chase is a prodigy of 116, and in true 116 fashion this project consists of top quality production, ridiculously hot beats and a message that speaks to you long after the music stops. 116 artist Lecrae makes a guest appearance on Track 4 "Conviction." For those of you who love artist like Trip Lee, Tedashii and Lecrae then you will also enjoy Dillon Chase's The Light. Although he is a 116 prodigy, make no mistake, Dillon Chase can hold his own, and in my opinion this project is worth consideration for being added to that category I call Holy Hip Hop Classics: a project that is a perfect synergy of music and message, tracks that will speak to the heart while making the head nod, and continue speaking to you long after the beat stops. With solid production, heartfelt lyrics, hot music and a few 116 member guest appearance this is a must have for your collection.

Spiritual Significance

Appropriately titled The Light, this project deals with letting our light shine in the darkness, living without compromise and taking the Gospel to those that are lost. This project brings to mind several scriptures that deal with letting our Light shine. Scriptures like Matthew 5:16 that tells us to let our lights shine to the point that people see it and Glorify God as a result of our righteous lifestyle, this message is echoed in the Intro, and throughout the album. The other scripture that comes to mind is Luke 11:33 [no man after lighting a lamp places it in a cellar or under a basket, but places it on a stand so that all who enter may see The Light] in other words as followers of Christ we should put our Light/Life on display so the World can see. This project skillfully reinforces the messages of letting our light shine, being in the world and not of it, and digging deeper into God's Word.

Topics Covered

The topics covered in The Light include Letting our Light shine as Christian, Living without compromise, Digging deeper into God's Word, fallen man's unworthiness without Christ and more. Tracks like "Soldiers," which features Tre Marquis, challenge the listener to put their boots on, a metaphoric challenge to gear up and get battle ready, hitting the front line to build the Kingdom. One of my favorites was track 3 "Christian Rap Fans," which is a challenge to both the Christian Rap fans and artists, to realize that Christian rap is just Christian Rap. Without dissing or blasting, he challenges the listener to dig deeper, to get into the word, grow in knowledge and understanding, and to seek after God's infinite truth and wisdom. As the hook states Christian Rap is working... but we only scratchin the surface... we need to dig deeper. In one of the verses Dillon states "Before I get into Lecrae /I'mma get into Paul, before I get into Json/I'mma get into John/ before I get into some Flame/who spits them heatas... I'mma dissect Romans and read some Peter." Here's a breakdown of some of the topics:

  • Intro - In the world not of it, walking the straight and narrow instead of the wide path to destruction
  • We Surrender - Offering ourselves as a living sacrifice to God, pursuing righteousness
  • Christian Rap Fans - Christian rap is merely that Christian rap, dig deeper seek truth. Partner this with Lecrae's track "After The Music Stops" this is what you do "Before the Music Starts"
  • Conviction - Hebrew 12:6 Godly discipline and trying to avoid it
  • We Aint Good Enough - Fallen man's unworthiness outside of Christ
  • Believers Anthem - (Hott) Infectious, rally call for the Believer [gotta blast this one with the windows down]
  • Soldiers - Live Worship out in your Lifestyle
  • Until The Wheels Fall Off - (Hott!!!) another banga challenging us to go all out and live and walk our Christianity out "Until the Wheels Fall Off!"
  • Stand Out - Self explanatory, challenge to step it up, be more than regular step up and stand out! No more blending in.
  • All I Needed Was You - Personal realization that Christ was the missing piece of the puzzle in his life.
  • Fighting the Flesh - Daily fight and struggle to keep the flesh in line and live the Christ life.
  • Saved By Grace - (Hott!!!) No man can boast saved by grace through faith, based on Ephesians 2:8-9
  • His Love Wont Let You Down - (Hott!!!!!) A reminder that His Love will never Leave nor forsake ya! No matter what you are facing or will face in the future God is Faithful.
  • You Chose Me - Discipleship, being poured into and then pouring out into others who do the same, Dillon shares how he was discipled by Sho.
  • Perfect Sacrifice - Christ's sacrifice for us.
