As a sports fan, I love rooting for the underdog (unless they're playing against my team). I make it a point to root for the underdog because I enjoy being able to celebrate with them when they are victorious over the behemoth of a team that was supposed to crush them into submission. I'm starting to see Christianity in the same light, at least somewhat. You see, with the way the world system is currently setup, Christianity and Christians are put in a position to make a fool of themselves and fail, therefore we are looked at as underdogs. The great part about underdogs is that sometimes they win and sometimes they fail miserably. If we were to define "underdog" we could define it as such: one that is at a disadvantage and is supposed to lose.

This reminds me of an episode of South Park that I had seen while in college. Now, I'm not a fan of the show at all, but I had a roommate who loved it, so I was bound to sit through a few episodes. There was one episode in particular that really relates to this topic. In this particular episode Satan and Jesus Christ were supposed to be facing each other in a boxing match. Satan was this huge muscular guy while Jesus was very feeble and weak. With this in mind, everyone in South Park bet their money on Satan to win the fight by a landslide. When the fight began, Satan basically fell over and let Jesus win the match. Why? Because he already knew that Jesus would defeat him, and secondly, he had bet on himself to lose the match, and ended up going to hell with millions of (useless) dollars.

So, how does this relate to Christianity? It's elementary; if we look at Christianity as a whole and the way that Jesus instructed us to live, it doesn't look like we're supposed to have the victory, at least not on the surface. When you look at big business and religions like Islam (the radical faction anyway), they use force and any means necessary to voice their opinion and get what they want. As a result, this makes us, the humble Christians, the underdogs in this world. But unlike some underdogs, we're going to have the victory in the end, and we should take joy in being the underdog. If we look at 1 John 5:4, we see that everyone who belongs to God has overcome the world (eternal life) and we are able to have this victory because of our faith in Jesus Christ. What does that mean? It means that no matter what the odds are against us, we can be like David the shepherd boy who slew the giant Goliath because of the faith that we have in our God.

Take joy in being an underdog. The world may have counted you out, but God hasn't; He has given us the secret weapon for victory, which is faith in Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the grave. Use this as motivation to witness and disciple others in the Way and to be more bold in your Christian walk. It doesn't matter what the odds are, God has already sealed the victory. It's just like in a playoff series, you may lose a game or two, but if you win 4 out of 7, you're going to win the championship. Keep pressing on and know that you're in a much better position by being an underdog in Christ Jesus.
